I added this to /etc/my.cnf in two places (see below) but to no
avail. I still get the error.

[mysqld]
datadir=/var/lib/mysql
socket=/tmp/mysql5.sock
# Default to using old password format for compatibility with mysql
3.x
# clients (those using the mysqlclient10 compatibility package).
old_passwords=1

[mysql.server]
user=mysql
basedir=/var/lib
max_allowed_packet=32M

[mysqld_safe]
log-error=/var/log/mysqld.log
pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid

[client]
socket=/tmp/mysql5.sock
max_allowed_packet=32M
