You should backup to a disk and then backup the file up on tape - tape
is MUCH slower and requires more of the SQL Server than doing it to
tape.

I install a 140GB MIRROR and then make two or three days backups to the
mirror so that I always have a couple days ready, I only backup the
current days files.
