Please check out OSM.
It allows you to write ANY script you want, in ANY language you want
and simple plug it in. You can the monitor one machine or as many
machines as you like. You can monitor "one thing" or as many things
as you like.
Because it is 100% web interface you must have apache installed in order
to have the web pages served up to your browser (pages created by OSM
from
your scripts data (i.e. the plugin))

It interfaces with cron very easily.
