As much as they might resist the idea of giving anything away, the
reality of the computer field today is that proprietary software is
being overtaken by freeware and open source. We don't want Progress to
be displaced by SQL freeware. The only way proprietary software can
make it in the market today is as an enhancement to freeware,
preferably open source, of its previous versions. I invite everyone on
this forum to join in urging PSC to make versions 6.3 and earlier
freeware, and preferably the Unix/Linux versions also open source
under the Gnu Public License. Then it could become part of the several
standard distributions of Linux, and Progress could emerge as the
dominant 4GL/DBMS on its merits. PSC will make a lot more money
selling later versions and we will all get more development work.
