OK, this is my problem... it is left at default (16 megabyte ?). This
must be a mistake in configuration, on other similar boxes I set this to
262144 (256 megabyte). The box has 4 Gbyte memory.

Thanks for the explanation - you were right on the spot, it will likely
solve the problem.
