I suggest registering on www.guru.com and/or www.dice.com. There are
probably other websites as well. You might even consider setting up
your own website, and buying some Google keyword advertising.

If you're going to go the consulting route, don't look at it as
"alternate employment." Look at it as a business. That includes
everything that businesses have to deal with: dry spells, slow and no
payers, bookkeeping, tax deductions, quarterly tax payments, etc.

I remember some advice for consultants working for a big company:
don't offer a discount for on-time payments. They'll pay you late and
take the discount anyway.
