I actually don't know. I've not installed a machine other than using
jumpstart in a long time. The last time I installed from media, I
didn't try to create a slice but not mount it anywhere. I *think* you
can do that; I've just not tried. Try setting a size of the slice but
leave the mountpoint empty and see what happens.
