Default openboot update problem

i'm trying to flash the newest ultra 2 openboot into an ultra 2 - i've
followed the instructions - unpack, move latest to / - chmod 755,
halt, set jumper writeable, reboot, ok boot disk
/flash-update-Ultra2-latest - this succeeds but when (or before) i
press enter to continue it just hangs... i'm using a serial terminal
(hyperterm) thanks for any clues. my nvram is set to defaults. i have
downloaded the patch several times, and have tried running ones
previous to latest, current openboot level 3.11 rev 2.

Rebooting with command: boot disk /flash-update-Ultra2-latest
Boot device: /sbus/SUNW,fas@e,8800000/sd@0,0 File and args:
/flash-update-Ultra
2-latest
