H Laurel,

I solved my problem by upgrading to the latest versions of binutils and
modutils (versions 2.14.90.0.4.1 and 2.4.25 respectively). I'm not sure
if the binutils was strictly necessary, but it now all builds and links
correctly without any gripes from depmod.
