Ext2 is a type of filesystem, like FAT or NTFS.

It should be added to /etc/fstab, but judging from the error messages,
that file doesn't even exist.

That's a good question. Is there anything at all in /etc?
Maybe you should reinstall, or try a more newbie-friendly distribution
such as Mandrake.
