These handy tools will give you lots of helpful info on how your network connections are working (or not):
ifconfig (should be part of your standard install)
iwconfig (in Debian, it's part of the wireless-tools package)
I get the impression that ndiswrapper only provides the compatibility layer upon which you can use the Windows drivers; have you also installed said Windows drivers?
Good luck; With my last brand-new notebook, it took me a few days to get a mostly satisfactory Linux install going, and more like a year to get all of the little odds 'n ends sorted out. Would've gone faster, but I got lazy and just used it as-is for months.
