I'm no expert since I've only done installs a handfull of times, but
I suspect you went wrong in assuming you needed to reinstall merely
because LILO became corrupted. If it's not booting at that point,
you slip a boot disk into the computer, and let that boot. Then you
have a working Linux, and you can fix the LILO issue.
