I haven't seen the problem you're describing, at least using older
copies of rz/sz on OS5 that I've used for years.
I've transfered several hundred MB files both over the internet and
local LAN's with no problem.
Zmodem is handy for one off transfers when you are already logged in
with a client that supports the protocol.
You can have problems if stdin/stdout is managed by something like DV,
but that manifests as a total inability to do a transfer.
With DV in use rz/sz does launch it's opposite number on my client
(SCRT), but it just sits there with no bytes transfered.
That usually results, after a DUH moment, in me muttering about mia
culpa or some such
