Default boot (kernel) fails on old laptop

hello!

i have just installed openbsd 3.4 on an old AST ascentia 900n
laptop. its a 486, 32mb ram, 75mhz and 500mb hd.

the install went ok, but when it tries to boot it fails.
the bootloader seems to find the kernel just fine.
the propeller thingy starts, and it spits out some numbers.

looks kinda like this you know (the numbers are all wrong):

4232434+23423453+[234545 blabla?]

something like that, it just flashes by when the propeller
stops so i cant write it down...

after that i should see the usual text with blue background,
when the kernel initializes stuff, right?
well, before that happens it just simply reboots.

i have tried installing the boot manager gag, but that made no
difference.

what could be wrong? what can i do to boot in to the system?
i mean, it finds the kernel, no?
i actually made sure that / is at the very beginning of the
drive, on the first 50mb.

why does it reboot once it seems to have read the kernel,
when after all the floppy disk boots the computer just fine?
