Default External fax modem

I've search on google the last 8 hours, but either there's really nothing
or i'm just too stupid ...

I plan to buy an external modem for fax purposes. Modems like U.S.Robotics
Message Modem or ELSA MicroLink Office support recieving fax without being
connected to a computer. There's a lot of software to setup and use this
features in windows, but I just didn't find anything that right for me in
linux.
I found so hints to a piece of software called "mepl", but I didn't found
any location to download. Even the homepage of this project is down and the
project pages on freshmeat don't exist anymore. This software is used for
USR Message Modems.
For use of ELSA modems I found some software. But this software is designed
for use under X, especially KDE. That's not what I've searched for. I need
a programm which for console which I can use to setup the modem and get fax
stored in modem's flash.

Anyone got a hint for me?

Greetings,
