They exist. Have a look at www.usr.com for example. It's a nice feature
that these modems are able to recieve fax even if your computer is off or
not connected. For my purposes they are perfect, because I just don't
want my computer to be up 24/7.

I know hylafax, but that's not what I mean. I've used hylafax to make a
fax server for a client, too.

I was searching for software which is able to read recieved faxes out of
modem's flash. And I've found "mepl" - which is a commandline tool to
setup such modem and download faxes from flash. That's what I've
searched. But I just wasn't able to test this software.
