And everything works as root, but not as a normal user? That's very
unusual, and I'm not sure what you've done to create this problem. Have
you tried creating an image file of the drive's contents using "dd"? If
you can do that, try loopback mounting it and see what you get.
Warning, that image could take up a hella lota space.
