There is no 'best way', at least not a general one that's best for
everyone.

When you build it your own, you build it exactly to your needs. You
include stuff you want, exclude stuff you don't. It's built against the
exact libraries present on your system at that time. You could add
patches, and optimise the binary and whatever else you can think of.
Then again, you might screw something up, include something that's not
entirely stable or accidently leave out something that you might need.

Using the official Slackware packages is definatly the 'safe' way, I
guess the decision depends on your definition of 'best'.
