Thanks for the input Bud.

As it happens, the problem was with the card reader, not with Linux.

Repaired the card reader and Slackware instantly reported sdb1 as available.

Mounted and read without issue.

Thanks for the help - it was nice to know someone got it running, made me
check the hardware to make sure it was working.
