could you try
bare.i video=vga16ff

(or even bare.i on its own, maybe)

as far as I know (I installed quite a long time ago, I still run a 7.0
and a 9.0), bare.i is the default kernel loaded on install. I am all but
sure, but I don't know if you may enter "linux" on install...

if you have scsi devices, use scsi.s rather than bare.i
the choice is amidst the available kernels in the kernels/ directory of
your CD-ROM

I hardly recall but I think that if, at boot time, just after the boot
prompt, as soon as you have pressed Enter, you press Ctrl, you should
also get a VGA menu to chose a good mode

but first, give a try to bare.i and (bare.i video=vga16ff if
necessary)

I have to stop my puter to fix something on my keyboard, I'll confirm
about the Ctrl key and VGA menu within half an hour if no one has done
so meanwhile.
