I had the same problem yesterday and got around it by
manually compiling and installing python in /usr/local/
to reemerge the accidentially downgraded glibc.

Another good idea would be to have really system critical
applications (there comes python and gcc to mind, for example)
statically linked by default. I'm sure this could have saved
a lot of user from big troubles in the past.
Also the existence of very useful tools like "revdep-rebuild"
is known by very few people. If all the gentoo system tools
had a certain namingscheme it would be easier to find them
(i.e. by using tabcompletion if they all started with a
certain string) and read through the manpages.
