Check out man ebuild. You can do the merge in stages.

Or create a /usr/local/portage directory, uncomment the line in
/etc/make.conf about using a local portage directory and then copy the
existing ebuild directory to the local one. Put your patch in the files
directory and modify the ebuild to patch it.
