This is a kernel issue, not specific to any distribution. This is
an active topic in the linux-kernel mailing list because support
for SATA is still under active development and not yet bug-free.
There have been several patches circulating there but I don't pay
much attention since I don't have any SATA drives. If you are
using a 2.4 kernel you might want to try a very recent 2.6-test
kernel instead. The drivers tend to be newer.
