I have /dev/lp0 as a symbolic link to /dev/printers/0. Do you
have /dev/printers ?

Does dmesg say anything about parport? (dmesg | grep parport)

If not, then it sounds like you don't really have parallel printer
support compiled in. Dumb question: you really are running the
kernel you compiled, right? Not an older kernel by mistake?
