I'm thinking of getting a 64bit (64-x86) system next year (maybe even
dual for SMP) and I've been told that Gentoo is great for running 64bit
and with a good 64bit compiler your can also optimize apps from source
for 64bit. Redmond is taking their sweet time getting a 64-x86 OS out
and never mind the lag we'd have to endure for the native 64bit apps to
be written.
I don't think I'll abandon Windows altogether as it isn't an either/or
situation for me. I've found XPpro/server 2003 to be decent desktop OS
once you address the security issues to keep Redmond from spying on you
after the installation and any updates.
I don't want a dual boot however. I'd prefer removable OS boot HDs and a
large shared internal data HD. How well do fast SATA (37GB WD Rapters)
HDs work in Gentoo? How about SATA RAID arrays?
