There are some issues with USB-IDE bridge chips. I have two USB external
cases. One works perfectly both ways and one reads perfectly, but writes
with errors. Not to mention, under Windoze they both work OK, but this is
probably a matter of adopting hardware to non-standard-conformant drivers
of Win...

Go and check http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/index.php , which is a fine
Linux-USB compatibility database. I shop USB devices with this list (since
the faulty USB case) and it never let me down.

Just open the case and enter bridge's chip ID into the DB. If someone found
any quirks, there might be a solution there.
