Erlang should compile with or withoutr an installed
java compiler. All that happens is that some
java dependant applications don't get compiled.
If that doesn't happen, there are bugs ... unclear
where though.

Weird, there are no real clues whatsoever in the output.
I just tried to emerge erlang here and it went just fine.
Maybe try to update your entire system first .. I don't know.
