I'm not sure if I understood what you meant. If you don't have the
graphical logon and only console then the GDM is not running AFAIK. Check
/etc/init.d/xdm status
and if it is : * status: stopped
rc-update add xdm default
then check your /etc/rc.conf if
# What display manager do you use ? [ xdm | gdm | kdm | entrance ]
