Took me almost three weeks. At first I thought there was no value in this
system and method. As I learned more about portage, I discovered that the
50 or so packages I maintained for myself and others in Slackware could be
automatically done here with minor tweaking. Yes, some ports are out of
date (xscreensaver, ROX libraries), but easy enough to fix once I got the
hang of it. I was especially impressed with the fact I could cvs using
ebuild!

Lastly, it was a real plus to find things like zip encryption and
cryptoloop extensions already patched into zip and mount, etc. These I had
to do separately on my own previously.

Gentoo definitely takes a lot of work to get going, and my first reaction
was "this is not worth it." I now use it full time.
