This is your problem.

/etc/make.profile should be a symlink to
.../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.0

this is the standard 2005.0 profile which features 2.6 kernels as standard

/etc/make.profile -> ../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.0/2.4

is what you use if you want to stick with 2.4 kernels
