Do you use splashutils compiled into the kernel (not initrd)? There's a
bug where /lib/splash/cache is incorrectly mounted and can't be cleanly
unmounted.

Are you using APM or ACPI? Sometimes they conflict with each other, and
you may want to turn off APM in the kernel.
