Default HP psc 1210 all-in-one prints black as red

Hello all,

My HP psc 1210 all-in-one inkjet printer has developed a curious problem:
when performing a color print it prints black as red. The result is that
all my prints are very reddish :-(

If I perform a black and white print the color black (and the gray scales)
are printed normally.

I am using (Gentoo) Linux with cups and hplip. Also installed are foomatic
and fax4cups. An overview of the installed Gentoo packages is given below:

[I--] [ Â*] net-print/cups-1.2.6 (0)
[I--] [ Â*] net-print/fax4cups-1.24 (0)
[I--] [ Â*] net-print/hplip-0.9.7-r3 (0)
[I--] [ Â*] net-print/foomatic-db-20060720 (0)
[I--] [ Â*] net-print/foomatic-db-engine-3.0.20060720 (0)
[I--] [ Â*] net-print/foomatic-db-ppds-20060720 (0)
[I--] [ Â*] net-print/foomatic-filters-3.0.20060720 (0)
[I--] [ Â*] net-print/foomatic-filters-ppds-20060720 (0)

The backend hplip program (/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp) output:

direct hp:/usb/psc_1200_series?serial=HU33IBP27R5H "HP
psc_1200_series" "hp:/usb/psc_1200_series?serial=HU33IBP27R5H"

And the /proc/version of my Linux configuration:

Linux version 2.6.18-gentoo-r2 (root@vapulo) (gcc version 4.1.1 (Gentoo
4.1.1)) #1 SMP Mon Nov 13 23:59:54 CET 2006

Any ideas anyone? I have removed and reinstalled all the above packages
(except fax4cups, which I believe is unrelated to printer issues).

Also I have unconfigured and reconfigured my printers under cups (using the
localhost:631 web browser interface, but with no success...

If I run Microsoft XP under VMWare Player - which accesses the printer
directly - then black is printed as black, so the problem is very likely to
be Linux configuration related.

I have no idea where the problem lies...
