I think I've seen both variants in different setup hints, so I guess
that's not the problem. Maybe that broadcast of yours is causing some
confusion, in case you haven't already changed that.

It all sounds very strange indeed.
You might try to re-merge baselayout, in case there's something wrong
with your /etc/init.d/net.eth0 script.
