I just had my system pulled out and all the wires disconnected, so I had
some time to play around with the weird mouse behavior.
It turned out that it wasn't the new usb mouse that was keeping the system from
booting.
It was removing the old ps/2 mouse that was the problem! I played around with
the BIOS ( legacy USB enabled, serial port disabled ). Whatever I did, now
the system boots.
