I am not sure about version 9, but in version 8 the free clients do not need
extra software (DB2 Connect) to connect to a mainframe DB2, but you did need
a license for DB2 Connect to be installed. The DB2 Connect software is
integrated into the Version 8 clients, but a license is still needed. If you
have DB2 V8 ESE server installed, it comes with a 5 user license for DB2
Connect.
