The Thinkpad 770 has a modem. Sometimes, quite cheap, you can find one
on Craigslist. It works with Linux (but, some tweaking is necessary).
It's an older computer; so, a full blown (kde/gnome) desktop is not
recommended.

That's not a modem in the 770, it's another sound card with the wrong
connector (ie, a "winmodem"). Google verifies this. It can't modulate
or demodulate on it's own, it has to offload it to software running on
the main CPU: Pretty close to the exact opposite of a modem.

TP570, TP600, TP760ED, T20, T23, R40, R41, T72...

They have all modems included and they are "Lucent WinModem"
which are working with Linux, including Fax...
