Default Cannot boot kernel - how do I recover system?

I was recently messing around with kernel recompiles and managed to
destroy all my bootable Ubuntu Hoary kernels (Idiot!).

My problem now is that I want to recover my system and not loose my
data - does anybody know how to do this?

You can boot off of a LiveCD (such as a Gentoo disc), mount your
filesystem, chroot to your old system, and then re-compile your kernels.
