I'm new to debian and busy solving problems and setting things up how I
like them (thanx lots to newsgroups like this and the wonderfull forums)
My problem is I cant get the time to agree with my other o/s on the same
box both are set to the machine clock yet windows xp says the right
local time and sarge is one hour ahead, when I change sarge time it
alters the system clock and so windows clock is one hour behind!
I'm sure theres a simple solution...no I cant delete windows!

On a *nix-only system, your system clock would normally be set to UTC,
but Windows insists on setting the system clock to local time. The
solution is to inform Debian that the system clock uses local time.
One way of doing this is to run base-config as root and answer "no"
when asked "Is the system clock set to UTC?".

Where do you live? This is not an idle question - the probabilities are
that you're have either a 'daylight saving' vs 'standard' time issue or a
local vs GMT issue.

Agreed - I saw that question during the install - and answered "no" and
the clock is OK.

You do not tell us which timezone you are in. Are you in the UK? Are you in
Malta? Are you in Gibraltar? ....

Windows DEMANDS that the machine be set to local time. Linux would rather
it be set to UTC, and it will take care of all daylight savings, etc
changes, but if you really want to take care of them yourself, then you can
set it to localtime

Not sure how Debian does it, but at present you have told Linux your clock
is on UTC. Thus it adds an hour for daylight time.

It asks a question during installation and stores the answer in
/etc/default/rcS.
