Default How to make room for / partition to install/upgrade Kernel?

Hi! How can I increase my / partition without reformatting and hosing my
system? I used the default setting (couldn't find a way to set a bigger
partition so I left that way, but now Kernel got too big!) when installing
Debian with Sarge installer back in September 2004.

Here's the log:
# apt-get install kernel-image-2.6.9-1-k7

Removing kernel-image-2.6.8-1-k7 ...

You are running a kernel (version 2.6.8-1-k7) and attempting to remove
the same version. This is a potentially disastrous action. Not only
will /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8-1-k7 be removed, making it impossible to boot
it, (you will have to take action to change your boot loader to boot
a new kernel), it will also remove all modules under the directory
/lib/modules/2.6.8-1-k7. Just having a copy of the kernel image is not
enough, you will have to replace the modules too.

I repeat, this is very dangerous. If at all in doubt, answer
no. If you know exactly what you are doing, and are prepared to
hose your system, then answer Yes.
Remove the running kernel image (not recommended) [No]?

I was too scared to try this so I aborted that plan.

# uname -a
Linux ANTian-AXP 2.6.8-1-k7 #1 Thu Nov 25 04:13:37 UTC 2004 i686 GNU/Linux

How can I increase the partition so I can install the latest greatest
Kernel? This is my Debian workstation box. Please note that I am not a
Linux expert. I just know some ways around in it. Thank you in advance.

I am going to need some help after reading parted's manual on
http://www.gnu.org/software/parted/m...no/parted.html ...

What would I put for resize [minor start end] in my situation? I am not
knowledgeable on disk partitions. Is there a GUI version like Partition-
Magic that makes things easier?

Oooh! I like after downloading parted via apt-get, but I cannot seem to
resize the / partition. It is greyed out.

Uh oh, it looks like I can't resize EXT2 and EXT3 partitions according to
http://qtparted.sourceforge.net/features.en.html ...

Any other ideas? I don't mind doing command lines if I get detailed
instructions as long as my HDD data stay intact.

You could boot up with knoppix liveCD, run QtParted and shrink/expand
partitions to hearts content.

After booting up on knoppix,
you can also zip up and back up entire partitions..

change to /mnt/hda1 or whatever your hard disk is..
to zip up into one file*** tar -cfzv <filename.gz> .

likewise when restoring go to the correct drive like /mnt/hda1 or whatever,
and then to unzip the files** tar -zpvf <filename.gz>

This is an example of why fewer partitions is better. If you had merged
/, /usr and /var into one partition, you wouldn't have had this problem.

I believe those were the defaults in Sarge installer. This is ignoring
hdb. /storage was my former Red Hat Linux partition and backup HDD. I am
still learning Linux.
