installation of dapper/edgy freezing

Hi,

A friend of mine tried to install ubuntu 6.06 and 6.10
(alternate-install cds) on a brand-new Siemens Scaleo P, Pentium D
2.8 GHz, mainboard ASUS P5SD2-FM, SATA harddisk Seagate ST3250824AS.
The machine, including the harddisk, works fine with Windows XP.

Installation of ubuntu 6.06 exits with a bluescreen after "trying to
detect drives and other hardware". Installation of ubuntu 6.10 stops
when trying to detect drives and hardware with the error message that
there was "no hard disk".

The hard disk, with Windows XP installed, cannot be mounted from a
terminal. Apparently the harddisk cannot be found.

My questions:
- Are SATA buses and harddisks usually supported by ubuntu 6.06 and
6.10?
- Could the problem be solved by manually loading a SATA kernel
module?
- If so, is it possible to load the kernel module during the
installation (e.g. switching to console in a live cd install)? Are
the kernel modules available from the installer cds or would an
internet connection be needed?
- How can I find out what kernel module I need to load, i.e. its
name?
- Could the problem in theory be solved by using an installer with a
very recent kernel (which, AFAIK, doesn't exist for ubuntu
6.06/6.10)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
