I installed Kanotix on my hard drives (4 boxen) about 18 months
ago. I love it!

Kanotix is Debian on steroids. As root, use apt-get update
followed by apt-get dist-upgrade to update. There are various
graphical tools like KPackage, Synaptic, etc as well.

The install includes a functional /etc/apt/sources.list,
but you may wish to use repositories closer to your location.

Hi,

I was just wondering why? Is it just because it's easier to install or? I
read the hardware detection is great. What does it do differently than
Debian Sid that makes it so much better?

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Hello Steve,

I had been using LibraNet.

I read a review somewhere about Kanotix and tried it ... my first encounter
with a live-CD. Hardware detection is great, install from the live-CD to
hard drive is easy and Kano has added a collection of scripts that smooth
some of the rough edges in Debian. I had tried Knoppix just before Kanotix.
I have installed and tried Debian and Ubuntu since. For me, Kanotix is
best. I wouldn't say hugely better, but better enough to keep me tuned in.

Generally, it isnt wise to update a system, which comes from a livecd.

Why is that?

I do apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade of Kanotix frequently against
Debian Sid, have had no problems.

Live CD distributions which include the capability to install to HD are
becoming popular. (Yet another reason to not use Windows!)

and have had no problems
