Default MD5 passwords really necessary?

Hi,
Are MD5 passwords really necessary? For my system, which has very
little users accessing it, is it really that necessary for MD5
passwords? I chose the option during setup as it says its much better
security, but I'm having problems installing courier-authlib
(authentication module for sqwebmail's pop3 daemon) because of the MD5
passwords.
If I was to chose to disable MD5 passwords, how would I go about doing so?
Thanks for the advice,
Cheers,
Camilo
