Problems with CF card

I have a Sony Vaio UX1XN with a compact flash card, connected via PCMCIA, it
seems. It appears as /dev/hdc in the system. Writing to that device is very
slow and consumes a lot of CPU power. Is there any way to get this more
efficient? Using Debian Testing...
