Default SASL plain authentication failed

Hi all.

I am trying to get postfix configured to authenticate with SASL. I
have it all installed as far as I can tell and I am trying to test it
via telnet on the localhost. I am using the command " perl
-MMIME::Base64 -e 'print
encode_base64("testuser\0testuser\0testpassword"); '" to create the
correct command. This user I created via saslpasswd2. Using SMTPTEST
i can login fine. However, via telnet i get the below error.

ehlo localhost
250-myserver
250-PIPELINING
250-SIZE 10240000
250-VRFY
250-ETRN
250-AUTH LOGIN PLAIN
250 8BITMIME
ehlo localhost
250-myserver
250-PIPELINING
250-SIZE 10240000
250-VRFY
250-ETRN
250-AUTH LOGIN PLAIN
250 8BITMIME
auth plain xxxxxxxxx
535 Error: authentication failed

I get the error "warning: localhost[127.0.0.1]: SASL plain
authentication failed" in /var/log/syslog as well.

Please help! I have been stuck with this for a while now. I am not
sure what other config files to post, so if this is not enough let me
know.

Thanks in advance.
