I bought the book "Ubuntu Linux Bible" and tried to use the disk in it
to re-format my disk and install (the desktop version). However the
process froze in the middle and I was unable to continue. I then
downloaded the ubuntu CD image from one of the mirors listed in the
Ubuntu home page and burnt a CD. When I rebooted from the CD I got
into the "grub" command line. One of the commands is "install" but it
expects some file name and I don't know how to proceed.

I believe that is a 'live install CD'. I think you have to boot to the
Live CD first and then select 'install' from the desktop. Just hit an
enter when it gets to the grub prompt and let it boot.

Which Ubuntu disc did you download? Generally there is the option of
"Install Ubuntu" in the LiveCD. You just click it and Ubuntu manages
the rest.
