IE is not available legaly for free, or is it? I asume that officialy if
you want to run IE, you should read the licence. No winders licence, no
IE.

I knew the answer. And yes IE is free. What is not free is the Windows OS
to run it on if one uses VM. It was not I who cared but rather Riberto who
needed to use it for his job.

Besides web developers have to care because they have to test their code
with as many browsers and/or operating systems as possible.

None will work? Where did you get that from?

And sure windowses can be bought.

Virtual machine gives a disk image to the guest OS who takes it as a disk.
It also provides it with the rest of the virtual hardware.
The guest won't touch the rest of the disk. It does not even know there's life
outside this virtual machine.

That was interesting so I did it, but no cigar:

ies4linux-2.99.0.1> ./ies4linux
No user interface available. Use command-line ies4linux or install
pygtk. Details: http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/page/No_GUI

Then, that link gives:

"There is currently no text in this page, you can search for this page
title in other pages or edit this page."

I'm still using VMware

Besides all the tips on how to solve your problem, you might consider
telling your IT-department that builing IE-only website is building the
legacy application of the future. The next version of IE (8) will
probably more compliant with the W3C standards, which may also imply
that old websites will not work anymore.
I know this can be an awful long discussion, but it is worth trying.

Success,

Joost

Install python-gtk (same as pygtk but SUSE names it differently)...

For my edification, is it a safe assumption that a restore operation would
be equally isolated? I have seen both types - the one that only messed
with the logical partitions as defined, the other that wanted to re-format
the whole bloody physical disk. The exception to the latter case was that
every one I tried would leave the hidden partition alone and use that to
re-install if necessary but I'm a pessimist and really don't want to chance
losing the other partitions so I'd appreciate input from someone that has
actually tried the re-install from some of those hard drive
resident "sources".

Where I work we work with differnt external partners, so we do not
always have a choice. One system needs IE6 and is only tested on that.
Some people have IE7, so some functionality is lost. The reason it won't
work is because it is heavily Winders directed.

e.g. what it can do is, like a virus, via a website force things to
happen on your PC. It can steer other programs on your PC. This is
intend use and the reason is easier work. Instead of using 7 or 8
unrelated programs, where you look up and enter information that is
almost identical in all of them, you only need to do it in one.

Then another partner tells us to use Firefox. I am looking into why and
am in the situation now where I am trying to hack the site in such a way
that it can be used with IE, so people only need to use one program.

The things we get done from IE are not possible with Firefox in a nice
and easy way at this moment.

Wether or not this is a good thing is nice to discuss with a pint of
beer. The fact is that our department won't get away from it in the very
near future. At other places they are looking to go all Linux though, as
their demands are completely different.

I've had no issues, ever.

I don't follow.
Virtual disk image is not a logical partition.

I don't follow. Virtual machines are just files, where ever you put
them. What hidden partitions?
