I've just installed SuSE 8.2 and it's not recognising my Alcatel
SpeedTouch USB Modem. When I try to manually install it Yast doesn't
come close to recognising it as far as I can tell. Except that when I
try to install my CanoScan FB610 scanner from Canon (which is another
problem altogether) it picks up the SpeedTouch ADSL modem under USB

How do I get SuSE to recognise the modem?

I'm not at all familiar with Linux, total newbie. I wouldn't know how to
install a driver if my life depended on it. So if the problem is simply
that I need to install a driver, where do I get it and how do I then
install it, step by step in layman's terms please.

I did find the following FAQ on the subject and have downloaded the
drivers mentioned but again, consider me totally dim about this stuff.
I'd really rather have someone walk me through it, or at least just
highlight the stuff I NEED to know and do from this FAQ.

General
=======

There are two USB Speedtouch drivers available for Linux. For the sake
of argument we shall call the "user-mode" and "kernel-mode". This
package and documentation refers to the "user-mode" version which is not
related to the "kernel-mode" drivers in any way (except we use the
managment code to provide the microcode for the modem).

Do not mix and match instructions/faqs/howto's between the two projects
as you will get very confused (and probably confuse everyone else). If
your interested in the kernel-mode version then please see:

Briefly the kernel-mode driver is built into the linux kernel as an ATM
device and uses a patched version of pppd to terminate the ATM and give
you IP. This means the data spends more time in kernel-mode (which
should improve latency).

The user-mode driver terminates the USB device in user-space and
demangles the ATM into "normal" ppp packets for a normal pppd. Although
we recommend some kernel options you generally don't need to patch
anything.

We of course recommend the user-mode as being easier to set-up but then
again we are biased :-)


Configuration Questions
=======================

1.1 Which linux kernel version was used to develop this software:
linux kernel version 2.4.3 >=

1.2 What configurations have been tested?
(and what kernel version is known to work?)

See the file results.txt for some systems that have been tested.

2.2.x series : 2.2.17, 2.2.17-21mdk, 2.2.19-5mdk, 2.2.20,
2.2.19 shipped with the debian potato.
2.4.x series : 2.4.0, 2.4.2<->2.4.18

2.5 development series are not supported (because the usb stack
changes too much, between each kernel release). If you find a
problem with modem_run on a development kernel please re-test with
the latest 2.4 stock kernel before asking the list or report the bug
to the linux-usb kernel hackers.

Kernel older than 2.2.17 does not work
Kernel 2.4.1 freezes.

1.3. Does it need kernel patches or pppd patches to work?

This solution uses a standard kernel ppp and all the ATM handling is
done outside of the kernel. There is another driver that uses a patched
kernel (for ATM support) and patched pppd (for the pppoa bit). They are
not required for this solution they may even be incompatible with this
driver.

1.4 What about the HDLC BUG?

Well ok you may need a kernel patch for that, see HDLC_BUG for more
details. (Addendum : the patch is included in vanilla kernels since
2.4.18-pre1)

1.5 I can see a lot of line like
"usbdevfs: USBDEVFS_BULK failed dev 2 ep 0x81 len 16 ret -110", what's
that?

There are "normal" error messages output by your linux kernel.
Don't worry too much about them. It may be fixed in a future release.

1.6 I can see a lot of line like:
"usbdevfs: async_completed: status -2 errcount 0 actlen 0 pipe
0xc0008280"

This is entirely normal message output by your kernel. If this is a
worry for you (log file are too big), there is only one solution :

- go to /usr/src/linux/drivers/usb/devio.c
- change #if 1 to #if 0 in async_completed() function
- compile/install your new usbcore.o module.


1.7 I'd like to start my connection when linux is started. How to do
that?

We provide a SysV init script suitable for debian/rh/mdk. The script
is called speedtouch and is usualy copied into /etc/init.d by the
install process. RPM installs also use this

The configuration file for the script is kept in your system config
directory (usually /etc/speedtouch.conf).

It suppose the modem is the only usb device and that it can shut down
usb without interfering with other usb devices. But the script is as
flexible as we could code it. See howto use it :

Then configure the speedtouch.conf in /etc :

First set of variables : Those variables tell the script what module
to load

LOAD_USBCORE= (0 when usbcore is in kernel | 1 when it is a module)
LOAD_USBINTERFACE= (0 when the usb interface is in kernel | 1 when
it is a module)
LOAD_NHDLC= (0 when compiled in kernel | 1 when compiled as a
module)

Then : This will give the script a fallback usb interface when it
doesn't find your usb-interafce module in /etc/modules.conf (Debian
users
must set this value)

DEFAULT_USBINTERFACE=("usb-uhci" | "usb-ohci")

(do not use "uhci" which is buggy with some kernel versions)

NB: Some distributions (e.g. Mandrake) already load the USB drivers
on startup (look for /etc/init.d/usb) so the LOAD_USBCORE and
LOAD_USBINTERFACE cariables can be set to 0.

Then : Sets the modem_run verbosity
VERBOSE=(0 | 1 | 2)

Then : Defines the peer pppd shall try to "call"
PEER="adsl" if you followed the HOWTO

And finally : Defines the firmware location
MICROCODE="the_right_path_to_find_the_firmware/(mgmt.o |
alcaudsl.sys)"

NB : No other variables should be changed

Then it depends on your distro

For RH/Mandrake distros :
cd /etc/rc.d/init.d
chkconfig speedtouch on

For Debian distros (stable, testing, unstable)
update-rc.d speedtouch start 90 2 3 4 5 . stop 10 0 1 6 .

It should be activated during next reboot.

ISP Settings
============

2.1 What login I should use with my ISP?

Logins vary with various ISP's and the wrong format can cause problems
with things like authentication.

Known Problems
==============

3.1. I have heard about upload problems. What is the current status?

This problem is solved by using the HDLC line discipline. No upload or
download limits are hardcoded in the driver. The upstream/downstream
speed messages is purely informationnal and is not use in any part of
this driver.

3.2 Downloads from some web-sites don't work!

Several people have reported such problems. We are not sure of the
exact reason but the consensus seems to be its a dodgy USB chipset
problem. If can try on different USB hardware it may solve your
problem.

Some patches exist that increase the time-outs seem to of helped some

Troubleshooting
===============

4.1 pppd says that there is no PPP support.

=> look at /dev/ppp. "ls -la" should give
crw-rw---- 1 root root 108, 0 sep 27 2000 /dev/ppp

If not, create /dev/ppp with the following commands:
mknod /dev/ppp c 108 0

4.2 I get the message "ADSL line is blocked?" and modem_run just
terminates - Why?

Perhaps you have missed the -m flag off the modem_run command line?

4.3 I have seen messages like:
"usbdevfs: process 833 (pppoa2) did not claim interface 1 before use".
Does it mean that something is wrong?

No. It is just a programmer error in the source code of the program. It
has no consequence on the behaviour of the driver. Just signal them to
the
maintainer.

4.4 When I got disconnect by my Internet provider, pppd is unable to
reconnect automatically, saying "Modem hangup". If I look at the pppoaX
logging in syslog files, it shows the following messages

"usbfs_claimintf: Device or resource busy".

This is a known pb. See the file HDLC_BUG for instructions on how to
patch your kernel sources. If the problem persist, get in touch.


4.5 pppoa3 is not closing when a ppp session fails?

On some versions of pppd it fails to signal to its pty's to let them
know to close down. I think this is a bug in the version of pppd, if
anyone can work out who the maintainer is then let me know. This can
cause a new instance of pppoa to start not get anywhere (and lock up
your machine if pppd is setup for infinate retries).

The workaround is to invoke pppoa with the -c option and it will clean
up any rougue pppoa's before attemptiing to access the previously locked
resources.

4.6 pppd can't load some modules!

Example:

Have you set your aliases up in modules.conf?


4.8 What interesting files I should look at in case of problems?

/var/log/messages
/var/log/syslog
/var/log/daemong.log
/var/log/pppoaX.log (for systems without syslog support only)

If /var/log/daemon.log does not exist, you can create it by adding
"daemon.* /var/log/daemon.log" at the end of "/etc/syslog.conf"
Next, restart syslog with '/etc/rc.d/init.d/syslog restart'

4.9 My microcode upload has failed!

We hear this from time to time and are not sure what causes this (except
maybe some strangeness on the USB's part). If your reporting this
problem to the mailing list please tell us what version and preferably
what the
md5sum of your microcode source is.

4.10 I get lot of LCP-Config-Request Timeouts

When trying to dial with pppd, I see this in my syslogd logs :

>Apr 27 11:26:05 leloo pppd[262]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/0

>Apr 27 11:26:05 leloo pppd[262]: Connection terminated.

and the last 3 lines repeating as many times as the maxfail value.

There're 3 possible problems causing this :

- Your ISP does not respond to your config requests. This cannot be
solved by the driver :-)
- You may have done a mistake in user/password between the adsl peer
file and the chap/pap-secrets file.
- Sometimes pppoa3 fails to remove its pid/lock file in /var/run/
Then check your daemon.log, and if you see lines where pppoa3 is
waiting like this :

>Mar 24 13:56:12 leloo pppoa3[25981]: Sending the kill signal to
1381 and >waiting
but this line is missing :
>Mar 24 13:56:12 leloo pppoa3[25981]: Ok, the previous instance
seems to >quit

To solve the problem, remove the pppoa3 pid file in /var/run and
try again

4.11 I get "USBDEVFS_BULK failed dev 2 ep 0x85 len 512 ret -110 " when
running modem_run

Alcatel has released two types of modems. For some of them, modem_run
has to read from the modem before trying to send it the firmware. This
type of modem is the less common. But to make sure all modems work with
modem_run out of the box, we have been obliged to put a read instruction
by default.

You can disable this first read instruction with the -s option (man
modem_run).

Anyway, if you see this error, it doesn't hurt. That's just you don't
have this rare type of modem.

4.12 Everything seems to work but ifconfig still shows no IP on ppp0

Chances are the ppp authentication is failing. You can up the debug
information ppp gives you in the logs by adding debug and kdebug to
your peers file (man pppd for details).

You probably should check the login's in your ppp peers file and
chap/pap-secrets is in the correct format.

4.13 I can a see a couple of IPs in my logs but I can't browse the web !

Well, you're probably connected but you forgot to configure your DNS
entries or pppd doesn't create them as it should do if you specified the
usepeerdns option in the peer file.

To see if you're connected try to ping a know IP, the best one is the
peer ip in the ppp interface output generated by ifconfig. If you can't
ping your peer then you're even connected, try checking your
configuration again.

If you can ping your peer, you're connected so you can solve this
problem easily:

- making a symlink between /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/ppp/resolv.conf
# ln -sf /etc/ppp/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf
- copying this file
# cp /etc/ppp/resolv.conf
- writing down manually the DNS IPs in this file

4.14 I've tried everything you said and it still does not work.

First you can try the speedtouch doctor in doc-linux/doctor. To build
the doctor, just type : # make and then run the speedtouch-doctor.sh
script.

It will output usefull hints to you. If the hints it gave you were not
so usefull, then read the next advise.

You may get some help from the mailing list speedtouch@ml.free.fr and
should read the mail list archive, perhaps your problem has been solved
in a previous thread.

However, you must give as many details about your configuration as
possible.

- your USB controller : cat /proc/pci
- your kernel version : uname -a
- your pppd version : pppd -V
- your driver version : modem_run --help
- your vpi/vci
- your ADSL provider & ISP name
- relevant section of your system logs (See 4.8), you can modify your
ppp option file to run the pppoaX program with option -v 2. This will
result
in a more detailed log.
- your problem description : crash, can't connect, poor performance
- anything you think it might be usefull

You are of course encouraged to modify the source code yourself & post
your working modification to the list.
