Applications have to be designed to support >2GB files : > in order to use the capability. : > : : Like I said, "OSR6 VxFS is a 2 Gig filesystem" because the OS is : unaware of large files -- WHICH MEANS: the operator could screw up a : file by using the wrong copy or backup command. : : I like OSR6 : I like VxFS : : It would be nice if they liked EACH OTHER!! : The OS is fully aware. There are simply two sets of tools to manipulate files, because legacy (OSR5, Unix 3.2.x and even Xenix) applications are used to calling the old tools. It IS a dilemna. SCO does better backwards compatibility than anyone else, and doing so in this case causes some Catch-22 issues. If they went the other root and ignored legacy compatibility, they'd still get yelled at, but by a different group of people ;-) Perhaps in a future installation CD recut the install program could ask if there are going to be any legacy apps, and if not, default to full OSR6 tool behaviour.
