I just did a samba restart (/etc/init.d/samba restart) and this hung the
system.

I am using the samba version installed from UnixWare 7.1.3 media. This is
installed on a new HP Proliant ML370G3 server with 2 3.0gGB Xeon CPU's.

I did the restart because the server had started to periodically hang, and
logs showed the following errors from samba

open_sockets: accept: Protocol error

This seems to start happening after a few days of running. Previously, the
system froze on it's own about a day after the messages began.

Anyone have any idea what my problem might be??

Ah, it's probably because UnixWare is incompatible with the GPL.

Ron,

try by applying the latest MaintenancePack/Update Pack available; they
are well known for fixing network problems on UW713.

Mind you that you MUST have a valid license to download and apply the
UpdatePack3 (the latest) whereas the MP are freely downloadable from
SCO's site.

This problem was resolved by installing an older version of Samba that we
had been running on the previous UnixWare 2.1.3 version that we had
installed years ago!
