| For more on the latest ranting from Darl: http://newsletter.infoworld.com/t?ctl=4AF096:1F2C549 This could well be titled ``Automobiles threaten buggy whip industry''. ``The worldwide software market ... was being threatened by the ideas behing the Free Software Foundation's GPL, the software license the governs Linux.'' New ideas have often been the bane of established institutions, whether it's people co-operating to produce better software in a way that won't benefit SCO, Astronomy showing that the earth isn't the center of the universe, or the Internet threatening the livelihood of broadcast media and corrupt politicians (but I repeat myself). Guttenberg's printing press not only put lots of monks out of work, but allowed the spread of many ideas which were anathema to the religious hierarchy. One of the primary jobs of management in any company is planning for the future so they aren't left providing solutions for markets that no longer exist or where their company can no longer compete. All too frequently they go to government to try to get laws passed that will protect them from this competition (and buy lots of politicians willing to sell their influence).
